Hey everyone, so I ran into a bit of a pickle while trying to get Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition to work with SmokeAPI, and I wanted to share what's happening. I've been messing around with CreamLinux and SmokeAPI for a bit, and usually, it's a smooth ride, but this time, AoE3 DE is throwing a fit.

The Nitty-Gritty of the Bug

So, the main issue is pretty straightforward, guys: whenever I try to launch Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition with SmokeAPI all fired up and ready to go, the game just refuses to start. It throws this nasty Wine fatal error message that basically says one or more of the game files are all messed up, which is super frustrating. The really weird part? If I uninstall or disable SmokeAPI, the game fires up without a hitch. It's like SmokeAPI is the sole reason for this whole kerfuffle. I've confirmed this behavior multiple times now, and it’s consistently pointing to SmokeAPI being the culprit.

How to Recreate This Mess

Reproducing this bug is as simple as it is annoying. Here’s the step-by-step:

  1. First off, make sure you’ve got Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition installed on your system.
  2. Next, ensure that SmokeAPI is already installed and configured for use.
  3. Now, try to launch Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition directly.
  4. And that’s pretty much it. The game won’t proceed past this point. You’ll be greeted with the dreaded error code 0x5, indicating that something’s fundamentally wrong with the game files when SmokeAPI is active.

It’s a pretty direct path to the problem, which is good for troubleshooting, but obviously not ideal for actually playing the game.

What Should Be Happening (The Expected Behavior)

Normally, when I’ve used CreamLinux with other games, especially Age of Empires titles, the DLCs tend to unlock automatically. This usually happens without needing to download any extra files or jump through hoops. It’s a pretty seamless experience that lets you dive right into all the content the game has to offer. For Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, I was expecting the same kind of automatic DLC unlocking when using CreamLinux and SmokeAPI. The fact that the game doesn’t even launch, let alone unlock content, is a clear departure from the expected functionality. It’s a bit disappointing when you’re looking forward to exploring all the new civilizations and campaigns, only to be blocked by a technical issue before you even get started.
